My Story, in Color
In high school, I wrestled with left brain/right brain direction in choosing an area to study. I remember trying to visualize the calculus formulas into drawings and paintings so that I might be able to remember them better. That’s when I chose to study art at Alfred University in upstate New York. Halfway through college, when my father asked how I was going to support myself, I changed course to use my left brain and study accounting and found gainful employment. So practical. So boring!
After decades of working in corporate and small business settings doing everything from CFO roles to everything in a small business office, it was time to get back to my roots. Art called me from every meeting, email, and phone call. I had placed making art into a compartment in my life of ‘when I have time’.
I never fantasized about sitting on the beach, only sitting at an easel. One day in 2025 it occurred to me that ignoring all these yearnings was ignoring my true self. As a young child, sitting and drawing with crayons was one of my favorite things to do. Making things with my hands has always brought me joy. Creating something that brings smiles or wonder to others gives me a sense of accomplishment. So here I am, Rachel Pisciotta, Artist.
