Morehead Sunset - 2015, Acrylic on Canvas.
Being in nature often leaves me awestruck on how old the earth is, how large and unexplored the universe is, and how small and insignificant my life actually is. Looking at rock formations that show hundreds of millions of years of history in its exposed layers is simply astounding. I marvel at the Earth's many treasures and never fail to delight in seeing new and exciting views. If you have ever hiked with me, you know that I stop frequently and take numerous photos of anything I find interesting. Back in my studio I review the photos to produce a composition and remind me of the sensations of the experience that I use to communicate through my paintings.
Standing on the edge of a cliff, feeling the sun and heat radiating off the surrounding red rocks, listening to the quiet of the surrounding land, seeing the intensity of the vast, blue sky, seeing life spring from impossible locations. These are all moments that inspire my paintings.
Zinnia Series - 6 Parts, 2025, Acrylic and Texture Medium on Canvas.
The intricacies of biologic forms are fascinating. I am constantly observing nature and how plants and inanimate objects interact. Life always finds a way - even in the toughest conditions. Grasses grow from cracks in desert rocks, wildflowers find a small crevice in a sidewalk, Trees continue to grow from cliffsides even though the earth crumbles around them. Life springs forth in the most beautiful forms. To me this is highly symbolic of the life we see around us in human form. How children survive terrible home circumstances, communities weather droughts and war; atrocities caused by both humans and nature. Yet, life continues. This persistence of nature drives my art. I explore bright colors, large, simplified shapes and the interaction of living and nonliving things.
Flowers and Stems Abstracted, 2024, Acrylic on Canvas.
Every piece of my art has a story. In my artist journey I love taking side trips. On a hiking trail you find little pathways off to the side of the main trail that often lead to a breath-taking view or a quiet resting place. My art my journey is similar. I will be traversing down a main pathway with a series of work and I like to try new techniques, go back to an old style, or explore a different topic or medium all together. These side-trips help me breathe artistically. They very often inspire a new series or new process in my work. If we do not stop and enjoy life along the way, we will miss the point of the journey.
Enjoy the view!
